Summary

They say every house has its secrets, and the house that Maggie and Nina have shared for so long is no different。 Except that these secrets are not buried in the past。

Every other night, Maggie and Nina have dinner together。 When they are finished, Nina helps Maggie back to her room in the attic, and into the heavy chain that keeps her there。 Because Maggie has done things to Nina that can’t ever be forgiven, and now she is paying the price。

But there are many things about the past that Nina doesn’t know, and Maggie is going to keep it that way—even if it kills her。

Because in this house, the truth is more dangerous than lies。

Wow。 Wowowowow。 I started off totally team Maggie and then slowly tipped towards team Nina later on。 Finally, realizing all of what had happened within the story as it's later revealed, you start to understand what actually happened between this mother and daughter duo。 I loved the writing, as this is the second book I've read from John Marrs。 I love how you're slowly enveloped into the context of their situation。I only took off a star because while I appreciate the ending, I wish we would've be Wow。 Wowowowow。 I started off totally team Maggie and then slowly tipped towards team Nina later on。 Finally, realizing all of what had happened within the story as it's later revealed, you start to understand what actually happened between this mother and daughter duo。 I loved the writing, as this is the second book I've read from John Marrs。 I love how you're slowly enveloped into the context of their situation。I only took off a star because while I appreciate the ending, I wish we would've been given more closure。 I wish that Dylan ("Bobby") got his happy ending that he so very much deserved。 This story was maddening。 。。。more

This book was disturbing on so many levels but it kept me engaged, wanting to know what was next, and what was driving these two women

Way to much jumping around for me… felt like every other chapter was 25 years earlier to present to one chapter to the other。 Got extremely bored in the middle of the book but kept pushing through to the end。 The ending did pick up my interest again and I’m glad I finished it。

Susan

Definitely a page turner, but not my taste。 Nearing the end where it went from bad to worst, the transition was just not believable thus the 3 stars。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I like that the ending isnt a happy one, its a different direction than most books but over all, it was hard to finish because i felt like it moved too slowly in some parts。 Additionally, had i known there would be topics of abortion (a forced miscarriage in the book) and child abuse, i wouldn't have read it。 Thankfully that stuff isn't gone into in gory detail。 Those are topics that are difficult for me to ingest。 I like John Marrs's books, this one wasnt great for me, and even still, I had to I like that the ending isnt a happy one, its a different direction than most books but over all, it was hard to finish because i felt like it moved too slowly in some parts。 Additionally, had i known there would be topics of abortion (a forced miscarriage in the book) and child abuse, i wouldn't have read it。 Thankfully that stuff isn't gone into in gory detail。 Those are topics that are difficult for me to ingest。 I like John Marrs's books, this one wasnt great for me, and even still, I had to finish it to know how it ends。 He always leads up to multiple twists and you usually dont see them coming until right before they happen, if youre even able to figure it out。 。。。more

3。5 stars rounded up。 What a psychological thriller about a really disturbing and dysfunctional family! The main characters were somewhat unreliable as narrators - perhaps purposely so - as their story is peeled away layer by layer。Full review here: https://sherobinreview。wordpress。com/。。。 3。5 stars rounded up。 What a psychological thriller about a really disturbing and dysfunctional family! Good storyThis book was very good with many twists and turns。 The only thing I did not care for was chapters going forward and back in time - I wish it had been a story straight through。 But still great read

Wow…this book is heavy。 In terms of shock value, it didn’t reach my expectations because I had already sensed most of the plot twists in the chapters leading up to them。 It might be because of some clues that the author sprinkled in the earlier chapters, but also because there are some aspects to the story that are similar to the movie, Fractured, which I watched recently。Nevertheless, I think this book is still worth reading! Although it was a little predictable, the characters, Maggie and Nina, really kept me hooked to the story。 Through their POVs, I found myself rooting for Maggie’s escape, while feeling terrified of Nina。 However, at the end of it all, I think both characters deserve a smack to the face because they both did a lot of messed up shit。 Although I favor Maggie more, I think the collateral damage caused by both characters could have been lessened if she just gave Nina the psychological help she needed。 😩 。。。more

Wow! This is the first book I’ve ever read that had me in such suspense I was afraid to read the next line! You know when you’re watching a movie and you don’t want to look but you do wanna look?! suspenseful I love the twists and turns all through out the book。 I only give it three stars because the ending doesn’t live up to the rest of the book。

The worst thing about any book is when you're loving it and obsessed with it, all the way up until the end。 The ending just didn't satisfy me。 There was so much more that I wanted and needed from it and it just didn't hit quite right。 That being said, the majority of the book was pretty good and it was the type of book where I couldn't stop listening。 I just wish the ending hadn't been such a let down。 The worst thing about any book is when you're loving it and obsessed with it, all the way up until the end。 The ending just didn't satisfy me。 There was so much more that I wanted and needed from it and it just didn't hit quite right。 That being said, the majority of the book was pretty good and it was the type of book where I couldn't stop listening。 I just wish the ending hadn't been such a let down。 。。。more

Kas üks või mõlemad? Kui üks, siis kumb? This was a really slow start for me。 Once it picked up, I got into it but I guess I had a hard time with the crazy storyline。 I was really mad at this mother for not getting help for Nina from start。 Okay so she did one really awful thing, mom overlooked it and tries to protect her。 Fine。。。then she does it again。 Once again, mom overlooks it。 Like come on。 What did you think would happen?
